Families
Street Events with children
The Street Events are a low-barrier, free way into the Fringe for families - exciting, spontaneous and weather-exposed. A little planning keeps a busy Royal Mile fun rather than frantic.
Before you go in
- Agree a clear meeting point in case anyone gets separated, and show the children where it is.
- Write your phone number on a card or band for younger children.
- Plan an exit route before you enter the busiest stretch of the High Street.
- Bring some cash - the performers run on donations.
Pacing the day
Treat the Street Events as a short, flexible stop rather than an all-day base. Crowds peak around midday on the Royal Mile, and the daily schedule is drawn from 10:00, so there is no fixed running order to chase.
- Build in toilet and snack breaks - the nearest facilities can involve a queue.
- The Mound Precinct has more space and a daily finale at 17:15.
- If crowds or noise overwhelm your group, step into a quieter close or an indoor break.
Crowd-tolerance notes
Families, disabled visitors and neurodivergent visitors need more than a "go to the Royal Mile" instruction. If anyone in your group has low crowd tolerance, choose quieter times, keep to the edges, and have a calm space in mind nearby.
Confirm specific times, BSL dates and facilities on the official Fringe Street Events page before you set out.
