How to choose Fringe shows

No one selects or ranks the Fringe programme - more than 3,600 shows and counting. Your job is not to find "the best shows"; it is to build a workable personal programme. Start with constraints, pick a few anchors, and leave room to discover.

A show-choice framework

FilterWhy it matters
Date / timePrevents impossible plans before you fall in love with a show.
Venue zoneReduces walking and late arrivals - cluster shows in one area.
GenreKeeps the day varied and matches your energy.
DurationDetermines how much food and rest gap you need.
PriceControls budget; mix in free and pay-what-you-can shows.
Access iconsPrevents avoidable access problems at the door.
Age guidanceEssential for families - the most useful filter you have.
Latecomer policyCritical for tight schedules; some venues admit no latecomers.
  • Use the official edfringe.com filters by date range and genre; the app has Nearby Now and Shake to Search for same-day finds.
  • Pick a small number of anchor shows, then leave daily gaps for word of mouth and discovery.
  • Do not treat star ratings or listicles as the whole decision - mix known names, small rooms, free shows and Street Events to taste.
