Where to stay
Accommodation is the first big Fringe decision, and the most emotional. Choose by venue zone, late-night confidence, walking tolerance and budget - not just hotel star rating.
Old Town
Atmosphere and Royal Mile access on the doorstep - the iconic base, and the busiest and priciest.
On top of the Street Events and central venues
Best for: First-timers who want maximum atmosphere and short walks to central venues.
Watch-out: Crowds, hills, noise and peak pricing.
Southside / Newington
Dense show access near the University venue cluster, with practical walking to the Old Town.
Walk to Southside venues; short walk to the Old Town
Best for: Show-going visitors who want to be in the thick of the programme.
Watch-out: Very busy during peak show times.
New Town
Hotels, dining and calmer gridded streets - a restful base a short, uphill walk from the Old Town.
Level streets; uphill walk south to the Fringe core
Best for: Visitors who want calmer evenings and good food, mixing in the International or Book Festival.
Watch-out: Uphill walks back to Old Town and Southside venues.
Haymarket / West End
A practical transport base with tram, train and airport links and plenty of hotels.
Some venues a longer walk or a short bus / tram hop
Best for: Visitors arriving by train or airport tram who want transport on the doorstep.
Watch-out: Less of the wandering Fringe atmosphere; some venues need a hop.
Bruntsfield / Marchmont
A local, residential feel with cafes and easy Meadows access to the Southside venues.
Flat walk across the Meadows to the Southside cluster
Best for: Visitors who want a neighbourhood feel and a level walk into the venue cluster.
Watch-out: Less central for the Royal Mile; quieter late at night.
Leith
Food, a relaxed waterfront and value for longer stays - with real travel time to the core zones.
Tram or bus to the centre; genuine travel time
Best for: Longer-stay visitors happy to build transport into their day.
Watch-out: Travel planning needed; not ideal for many short-notice show hops.
Portobello / outer areas
A beach break and lower intensity for rest days, with the lowest crowd pressure.
Frequent buses to the centre; plan journey time per day
Best for: Rest days and lower intensity, including families wanting a beach break.
Watch-out: Not ideal for packed, multi-show itineraries.
Price, intensity and late-return ratings are editorial 1-3 scores to compare areas, not prices. We quote no fixed rates - confirm current prices when you book.
