Walk first
Getting around
Central Edinburgh is compact and often quickest on foot - but it is hilly, cobbled and crowded in August. Build a walking-first plan, backed by the tram and buses.
Your options
- Walking: most central venues are walkable, but weather, hills and crowds slow you down.
- Tram: runs from the airport through the centre (Princes Street, Haymarket) to Newhaven.
- Lothian Buses: cover the city and outskirts, with night buses for late returns.
- Taxis: available, but short trips can be quicker on foot in festival traffic.
- Driving: parking restrictions are significant - a poor default for Fringe days.
Arriving
From the airport, take the tram or the Airlink bus into the centre. Trains arrive at Haymarket and Waverley, both walkable to central venues with luggage if you are prepared for some slopes.
The schedule-buffer rule
Treat travel time as door-to-door: exit the venue, cross the crowd, climb the hill, queue, have a bag checked, find a toilet, reach your seat. A short gap on the map is rarely a short gap in practice.
Transport guidance is from Edinburgh Festival City; confirm live tram and bus times and any disruptions before travelling.
