Families
The Fringe with children
The Fringe has a deep children's programme and a low-barrier way in through the free Street Events. The key is to under-book, plan the boring bits, and let the strange, wonderful bits happen.
Choosing shows
- Use the stated age range - it is the single most useful filter for family planning.
- Look for daytime matinees and shows billed as family or all-ages.
- Relaxed performances are offered across the programme; look for the relaxed icon.
- Much late-night comedy and cabaret is adult - check billing before booking.
On busy streets
- Agree a meeting point and a lost-child plan before joining the Royal Mile crowd.
- Put your phone number on a card or band for younger children.
- Plan toilet and food buffers - the nearest facilities can mean a queue.
- Have a calm, quieter space in mind nearby for a reset.
A calmer rhythm
Avoid overbooking, especially on arrival day. Build the day around one or two anchor shows, plenty of rest, and the realities of weather, stairs, cobbles and pushchairs.
Confirm age guidance, relaxed-performance details and venue access on each official show listing before booking.
